Snowflake quilt

Crisp white snowflakes on a quilted pink ground beckon you to snuggle in for winter's duration. Reminiscent of Grandma's day, this 75 x 90-inch quilt from the '30s has four distinct patterns of flakes and a sawtooth border, all hand-appliqued onto a cheery quilt top. We'll tell you how to make it just like they did in the good old days.

Try your hand at this delicate stitching with just a few blocks for a wall hanging first, then move on to the quilt.

Materials: 45-in.-wide fabric in the following amounts and colors: 7 yd. pink, 43/s yd. white, 51/2 yd. backing; quilt batting; cardboard or plastic for templates; water-erasable marker.

Instructions: Finished size, approximately 75 x 90 in.; block size, 15 in. square. Unless otherwise stated, sew with right sides together using 1/4-in. seam allowances. Measurements given for background blocks and borders include seam allowances. Enlarge patterns on page 45 to scale, flopping to complete. For each snowflake, cut full template for applique guideline and templates of each shape for cutting; add seam allowances if desired.

Cutting. Cut two 8 x 94-in. side borders and two 8 x 79-in. end borders from pink. Cut twenty 15 1/2-in. background squares from remainder.

From white, cut two 2 1/4 x 94-in. strips for sawtooth side border trim and two 2 1/4 x 79-in. strips for end trim. From remaining white, cut twenty 15-in. squares for snowflakes.

Trace snowflake shapes onto right side of white, adding 1/8-1/4 in. seam allowances to all pieces. Cut 5 snowflakes of each pattern.

Applique: Trace each snowflake pattern onto 5 squares, centering. Pin pieces to appropriate squares; hand-applique in place.

Assembly: Lay blocks in 5 horizontal rows with 4 blocks each, arranging patterns as desired. Quilt shown on page 40 has matching patterns running in diagonal rows. Sew blocks to form quilt top.

For sawtooth borders, fold strips in half crosswise. Referring to border diagram on page 45, snip away triangles to form sawtooth edges. End borders will have 24 peaks; side borders will have 30 peaks. Baste straight edges of sawtooth borders to pink borders, matching outer raw edges. Applique sawtooth edges in place.

Sew borders to quilt top, centering. Miter comers to resemble comer diagram on page 45.

Finishing: Cut backing in half crosswise. Join along long edges with 1/2-in. seam. Trim seam allowance and selvages. Trim backing to measure 3-4 in. larger than top. Layer backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste.

Quilt around snowflakes and along block seam lines or as desired. Trim backing and batting even with top; turn under 1/4 in. Slip-stitch edges, encasing raw edges and batting.
