Fun With Decorative Trims

Give ordinary accessories a custom look with decorative trims. (It's so easy, it feels like you're cheating.)

Next time you're cruising through a fabric store, stop at the decorative trim counter. You can do so many easy spruce-ups with just a few yards of fringe and some strong glue. We like to use hot glue or a fast-drying clear glue, such as Magna-Tac. Also, check out the impressive selection of trims at online shops such as www.trims plus.com, www.mjtrim.com, or www.tasselnfringe.com. The simple projects shown here go a long way in adding personality to plain pieces, and they won't steal much of your time either. In one afternoon, we whipped up three creations-and there's not a stitch in sight.

1. Make a Pretty Pillow

Trim isn't just for edges. We attached pom-pom fringe to the front of a $12 storebought pillow. Be sure the cut edges of the trim are glued down well so they won't fray.

2. Add Pattern to a Plain Pillow

Another pillow received a checked motif. First, attach a rectangle of fabric to the center of the pillow using a double-sided adhesive sheet, often called webbing and available at crafts or sewing stores. (When you run a hot iron over the sheet, it fuses two fabrics together, with no sewing required.) Next, glue on colorful gimp-a narrow, braided flat trim-making a ticktack-toe pattern on the pillow.

3. Give a Chair Some Flair

Think of trim as jewelry for your furniture and accessories. To give a boring chair a quick makeover, attach colorful fringe along the bottom edge of a slipcover that fits tightly on the seat. Choose a solid-colored cover so the fringe really stands out. Add a simple pillow in a coordinating hue to tie together the look.
