Embroidery - Basic Stitches

Stitching techniques and methods form the backbone of embroidery. Here is a glimpse at some basic stitches.

Stem stitch is visually a continuous line of stitches by carefully inserting and positioning the needle so that the beginning and end of each stitch is barely visible.

French knot sits on the fabric like a bead and should not flop around exposing strands of thread at its root.

Chain stitches and featherstitches should be equal in size and kept even tension so that the loops have a consistent openness or roundness.

Cross-stitches should all cross in the same direction.

Satin stitches are placed flush to each other and the threads remain flat and untwisted. An even edge around the stitches should be kept by placing the needle precisely.

Herringbone stitches, backstitches, blanket stitches, and running stitches are all basic stitches each requiring even spacing between stitches and uniform sizing of each element within the stitch.
